The monastery was called the Guanyin Hall and it was rich, and its abbot was old past counting: two hundred and seventy years, and vain about every one of them.

He received the travellers with tea in cups of jade and rhinoceros horn, and , who had been raised in a poor temple, praised the service, and the old abbot, unable to help himself, asked whether the distinguished guest from the great Tang had brought any treasures of his own to show.
