The night after the river, five of them now, they came to a manor.

It was a good one — walled, tiled, prosperous, lamps in the windows — and the mistress of it was a handsome widow who came out and told them, over an excellent dinner, her situation. Her husband was dead. She had a great deal of land, more than a thousand acres, and cattle beyond counting, and no man to run it, and three daughters, all beautiful, all unmarried. She had been praying, she said, for husbands to come to the door.
