Gold Horn came out with the last of the treasures and grief in place of cunning, and fought him through a long exchange of tricks — a rope that binds anyone, a fan, a length of the demon's own magic turned back on him — and it was close, closer than the caper had been, because a demon avenging a brother fights differently than a demon collecting a meal.
But Wukong had the gourd, and the gourd's logic is inescapable, and in the end he worked Gold Horn into the same corner the younger brother had died in: he called the elder demon's name from the mouth of the purple gourd, and Gold Horn, grieving, exhausted, and caught, heard his own name and could not not answer, and said yes, and joined his brother as liquid in the jar.
